What is a good salary to live in Hong Kong?

City Asia Updated July 2026

A good single-person salary in Hong Kong starts around HKD 35,000 to 45,000 a month (roughly USD 4,500 to 5,800) and a strong one runs HKD 60,000 to 90,000+ (USD 7,700 to 11,500+). The lower end covers the moderate benchmark of $3,725 per person per month with some room for savings; the upper end supports better housing in Mid-Levels, Sai Ying Pun, or Wan Chai and meaningful discretionary spend. Hong Kongโ€™s salary tax is among the lowest in the developed world (capped at 15 percent on a standard rate), so headline salaries translate well to take-home, partially offsetting the housing premium. Finance, law, and senior tech roles often exceed HKD 100,000/month. For a couple, combined HKD 70,000 to 100,000 is comfortable household income on the moderate standard.
