How much money do you need to live comfortably in Hong Kong?

City Asia Updated July 2026

A single adult lives comfortably in Hong Kong on roughly $3,725 a month (about HKD 29,000) using the moderate benchmark, with housing the dominant line at $2,222 (HKD 17,400). A couple typically lands at $5,800 to $6,800 combined. The comfortable tier ($5,775, about HKD 45,000) buys a meaningfully better flat in Mid-Levels, Sai Ying Pun, or Quarry Bay, regular dining out, and savings room. Housing alone can swing the budget by USD 1,000+ a month depending on neighbourhood and unit size: a 400 to 500 sq ft one-bedroom in Mid-Levels runs HKD 22,000 to 35,000, while the same flat in Sham Shui Po or Tuen Mun can be HKD 11,000 to 16,000. Hong Kong is meaningfully cheaper than Singapore ($4,450) and well above Tokyo ($2,325). For the full breakdown, see our Hong Kong cost of living page.
