Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Income Holdings LLC, the Wyoming company that owns and operates CostLiving ("we", "us", or "our"), collects, uses, and protects information when you visit our Site. We respect your privacy and are committed to handling your data responsibly.
1. Information We Collect
Information you provide: If you submit our contact form or sign up for our newsletter, we collect the information you voluntarily provide, such as your name and email address.
Usage data: We automatically collect certain technical information when you visit the Site, including your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, pages visited, and time spent on the Site. This is collected via analytics tools.
Cookies and local storage: We use cookies and browser local storage to remember your preferences (such as selected currency and cookie consent status). See our Cookie Policy for details.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate and improve the Site
- Analyse usage patterns and understand how visitors interact with our content
- Respond to enquiries submitted via our contact form
- Send newsletter updates to subscribers who have opted in
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
3. Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the Site. GA4 collects anonymised usage data. You can opt out of Google Analytics at any time by adjusting your cookie preferences or using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
We also use Microsoft Clarity to see how people use our pages, for example where they click, how far they scroll and where a page is confusing. Clarity records these interactions as session replays and heatmaps and sets its own cookies (listed in our Cookie Policy). Microsoft processes this data under the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Neither GA4 nor Clarity loads until you accept analytics cookies via our cookie banner. If you decline, neither runs.
4. CostLiving in ChatGPT
CostLiving data is available inside ChatGPT through a read-only connection to our server. When ChatGPT decides to use it, ChatGPT (operated by OpenAI) sends our server a short request containing only what is needed to answer: the place names asked about, and where relevant the spending tier, household size, US state and monthly budget limit. ChatGPT may also attach a short summary of what you asked and general hints such as your language and approximate location. Our server does not use, log or store any of that. We do not receive your name, email address or ChatGPT account details, and the only thing we keep is the aggregate entry described below.
For each request we record one aggregate entry containing:
- which tool was used (lookup, compare, rank or salary)
- the CostLiving locations that were matched
- any place names we could not match, lower-cased and cut to 60 characters, so we can see which locations people want that we do not yet cover
- the tier, household size and state filter, if given
- the monthly budget limit, rounded into a $1,000 band
- the number of results returned, and the date (day only)
We do not store IP addresses, user agents, session identifiers or the time of day. To stop abuse, Cloudflare counts requests per IP address for rate limiting; that count is handled inside Cloudflare's network and is not stored or logged by us. The aggregate entries are kept in Cloudflare Workers Analytics Engine for 90 days and are used only to measure usage and decide which locations to add.
Answers include links to our pages tagged with campaign parameters (for example utm_source=chatgpt) so we can count visits that come from ChatGPT. If you follow one, the rest of this policy applies to your visit as normal. Your use of ChatGPT itself is governed by OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
5. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services that may process data on our behalf:
- Google Analytics: website analytics (consent-gated)
- Microsoft Clarity: session replay and heatmaps (consent-gated)
- Formspree: contact form processing
- Beehiiv: email newsletter management
- Cloudflare: hosting and performance, and the server and usage counts behind CostLiving in ChatGPT
- OpenAI: operates ChatGPT, through which CostLiving data can be requested
Each of these services has its own privacy policy governing the data they process.
6. Cookies
We use essential cookies to remember your preferences, and optional analytics cookies (loaded only with consent). For full details, see our Cookie Policy.
7. Data Retention
Contact form submissions are retained only as long as necessary to respond to your enquiry. Newsletter subscriber data is held until you unsubscribe. Analytics data is retained in accordance with Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity default retention settings. Aggregate ChatGPT usage entries are kept for 90 days.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including the right to access, correct, delete, or object to processing of your data. To exercise any of these rights, please use our contact page.
