Question 1

Can I live in Puerto Rico on $2,000 a month?

Accepted Answer

$2,000 a month in Puerto Rico sits just below CostLiving's budget benchmark of $1,605 per person per month, so it provides a modest cushion but still requires deliberate housing choices. A solo person on $2,000 monthly realistically needs to skip the San Juan metro entirely. Outside the metro, in towns like Caguas, Ponce, Mayaguez, or smaller interior municipalities, one-bedrooms run $900 to $1,500, which leaves $500 to $1,100 for groceries (run 15 to 30 percent above mainland prices because of imports), utilities (LUMA electricity bills frequently hit $150 to $300 a month on a single-person AC home), transport, and discretionary spending. A flatshare in metro San Juan is the alternative if access to the city matters more than personal space. Couples sharing housing can clear the budget tier on combined $3,000 to $3,500 a month, leaving room. For the full cost picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 2

Can I live in Puerto Rico on Social Security?

Accepted Answer

Yes, US Social Security is fully payable to recipients living in Puerto Rico, and PR is one of the easiest international-feel retirement options for Americans (it is a US territory, no immigration paperwork required). The financial picture depends on benefit size. Average US Social Security retirement benefit sits around $1,900 to $2,100 per month in 2026, which falls short of PR's moderate-tier benchmark of $2,675 per person per month by roughly $575 to $775 a month but exceeds the budget benchmark of $1,605. Most retirees making PR work on Social Security alone either pair it with a modest pension or 401(k) draw, share housing with a partner (doubling household income while modestly raising costs), or move outside the San Juan metro to Caguas, Ponce, or smaller towns where one-bedrooms drop to $900 to $1,500. For the full retirement cost picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 3

How much income do you need to live in Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

A single-person moderate lifestyle in Puerto Rico runs $2,675 per person per month at CostLiving's benchmark, with housing at $942. Real listings broadly match: a one-bedroom in Condado or Old San Juan typically runs $1,700 to $2,800, with newer or oceanfront stock at $3,000 to $4,500. Outside the San Juan metro (Caguas, Bayamon, Mayaguez, Ponce) one-bedrooms drop to $900 to $1,500. Budget-tier living on $1,605 a month is workable with a flatshare or modest housing further inland. Two-person households typically need $5,500 to $6,500 for the same lifestyle. PR sits meaningfully cheaper than the US national average ($3,275) on totals and is also cheaper than the USVI ($2,700). For the full breakdown, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 4

Do I pay taxes if I live in Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but the structure differs from the mainland US. As a bona fide PR resident, you generally do not owe US federal income tax on PR-sourced income; instead you pay PR's own income tax, which runs progressive from roughly 7 percent to 33 percent across brackets. US-sourced income (mainland wages, mainland-sourced dividends and capital gains, US-sourced pensions, Social Security) typically remains taxable by the US federal government, with normal IRS filing required. PR also has IVU sales tax (11.5 percent in most municipalities, the highest in the US system), property tax (low by mainland standards), and municipal licence and patent fees for businesses. Federal payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) still apply if you work for a mainland employer. Bona fide residency requires presence on the island for 183 days a year plus tax-home and closer-connection tests. Tax planning around a PR move benefits materially from a CPA who handles both systems. For cost context, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 5

Can you live in Puerto Rico on $3,000 a month?

Accepted Answer

$3,000 a month in Puerto Rico clears the budget benchmark ($1,605 per person per month) comfortably and sits about $325 a month short of the moderate benchmark ($2,675). For a single person it works well outside the most expensive San Juan neighbourhoods. Practical picture: a one-bedroom in Bayamon, Caguas, or in less-central San Juan zones (Hato Rey, Rio Piedras) typically runs $1,200 to $1,800, leaving $1,200 to $1,800 for groceries, utilities, transport, healthcare, and discretionary spending. That funds modest restaurant outings, an older car, and basic local healthcare insurance. The squeeze comes with Condado or Old San Juan housing at $1,700 to $2,800 a month, which eats most of the budget. For couples sharing one residence, combined $5,000 to $5,500 monthly comfortably covers the moderate tier. For the full cost picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 6

How much is 1 gallon of milk in Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

A gallon of whole milk in Puerto Rico typically runs $6.00 to $7.00 in 2026, with the island average around $6.47 per recent retail surveys and a regulated price-floor increase from local dairy authorities taking effect 27 May 2026. That is 50 to 80 percent above the US mainland average ($3.49 to $4.00). Two structural reasons drive the gap. Puerto Rico's regulated farmgate price runs around $40 per hundredweight against the mainland average of $25 to $26, and the island's 11.5 percent sales tax (IVU) is the highest under the US flag. Plaza, Econo, and Pueblo supermarkets sit at the lower end of the range; corner colmados charge more. The broader grocery basket runs 15 to 25 percent above mainland prices, factored into PR's $559-a-month food line at the moderate tier ($2,675 total). For the full picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 7

Is it cheaper to live in Puerto Rico than the US?

Accepted Answer

Puerto Rico is cheaper than the US national average and dramatically cheaper than major US metros. PR moderate is $2,675 per person per month versus the US average of $3,275, making PR about 18 percent cheaper. The headline conceals significant variation. PR is much cheaper than New York ($5,775), Boston ($4,675), and Los Angeles ($4,350), and cheaper than Miami ($3,925). It is more expensive than mainland low-cost states like Mississippi ($2,325) and Alabama ($2,400), and cheaper than Florida ($3,500). The composition matters: PR housing in metro San Juan runs above the mainland mean but well below coastal metro pricing, while groceries run about 8 percent above mainland prices because of import dependence. Utilities run higher because of LUMA Energy rates. For a mainland-coastal-metro mover, PR is meaningfully cheaper; for a mainland-low-cost-state mover, it is not. For the full breakdown, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 8

Is it hard for a US citizen to move to Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

Legally, no: PR is a US territory, so any US citizen can fly in, rent or buy property, and become a PR resident on day one with no visa, no residence permit, and no immigration paperwork. A US passport or driver's licence is sufficient. Practical friction begins after landing rather than at the border. Cars typically ship from the mainland via barge ($1,200 to $2,000 plus federal and PR import processing). Household goods follow on the same carriers. Banking is local rather than national-chain in most cases, though some mainland banks (USAA, Charles Schwab) work normally. Driver's licences need to be exchanged for PR licences within 30 days of residency. Medical and legal professionals need PR-specific licensing. Spanish is widely spoken alongside English, but day-to-day government, hospital, and retail interactions are easier with conversational Spanish. The headline cost question is the operational hurdle most movers actually feel rather than legal entry. For the full cost picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 9

What is the downside of living in Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

The honest downsides cluster in three areas: power grid reliability, hurricane exposure, and import-driven prices. LUMA Energy supplies most of the island and outages remain frequent (rolling brownouts, scheduled maintenance interruptions, and longer outages after weather events); many residents budget for backup generators or whole-home batteries. Hurricane season runs June through November and a major storm hit causes weeks of disruption (Maria in 2017 is the recent worst case). Imported goods carry shipping premiums: groceries run 15 to 30 percent above mainland prices, electronics and appliances similar, and cars cost more than mainland equivalents after shipping. Spanish dominates outside metro tourist areas. Local salaries are well below mainland US for most professions, so PR works best for remote workers earning mainland income, retirees on mainland pensions, or Act 60 beneficiaries with portable capital. Healthcare is solid but specialist depth thinner than mainland metros. For the full cost picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 10

What is the rule 60 in Puerto Rico?

Accepted Answer

Act 60 is Puerto Rico's consolidated tax incentive code, passed in 2019, which folded the earlier Acts 20 and 22 (and several smaller programmes) into one statute. The two headline benefits for individuals and businesses moving from the US mainland: a 4 percent corporate income tax rate on qualifying export-services income (the old Act 20 benefit) and 0 percent tax on PR-sourced capital gains, interest, and dividends earned after becoming a bona fide resident (the old Act 22 benefit). To qualify, individuals must establish bona fide PR residency (183 days physical presence test, tax-home and closer-connection tests), purchase a home in PR within two years, and make annual donations to PR-based qualifying charities (currently $10,000 per year). Application fees and annual reporting requirements apply. Act 60 has attracted crypto investors, fund managers, and remote business owners. It is complex and worth professional tax advice before relocating. For cost context, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.

Question 11

Where can I live comfortably on $5,000 a month?

Accepted Answer

$5,000 a month covers comfortable living across much of the US South and Caribbean, and Puerto Rico is squarely on that list. With PR's moderate benchmark at $2,675 per person per month, $5,000 puts a single adult well into the comfortable tier ($4,145) with room for discretionary spending and saving. The same budget reaches comfortable in Florida ($5,425), Texas ($4,690), New Mexico ($3,990), and across much of the US South. Maine ($4,225) and Vermont ($4,575) fit too. The budget hits its limit in Los Angeles ($6,745 comfortable) and falls short in New York City ($8,950 comfortable), where housing eats most of it. Outside the US it stretches further: Mexico ($2,480 comfortable), southern Europe, and Southeast Asia deliver near-luxury living. For US-dollar remote workers who want Caribbean weather and US infrastructure, Puerto Rico is the sweet spot at $5,000. For the full picture, see our Puerto Rico cost of living page.
