Question 1

How much is $70,000 after taxes in NH?

Accepted Answer

$70,000 a year in New Hampshire nets roughly $56,000 to $57,500 after federal tax, or about $4,700 a month. The standout is the state side: NH has no broad-based personal income tax, so unlike Massachusetts (5 percent) or Maine (up to 7.15 percent), the entire state slice of your paycheque stays with you. NH does tax interest and dividend income (5 percent, currently phasing out), but salary and wages are untaxed. CostLiving's moderate single-person benchmark in NH is $3,125 a month, so $4,700 leaves roughly $1,575 of monthly slack for savings or discretionary spending. Property taxes run higher than nearby states, partly offsetting the income-tax advantage if you own. For the cost basis, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 2

Is $70,000 a livable wage?

Accepted Answer

$70,000 is a workable single-person wage in New Hampshire and tight for two. After federal tax and NH's no state income tax, $70,000 nets roughly $56,000 to $57,500, or about $4,700 a month. CostLiving's moderate single-person benchmark in NH is $3,125 a month, so $4,700 leaves around $1,575 of monthly slack for savings or discretionary spending. For a household of two in southern NH, $70,000 sits below the moderate threshold (roughly $6,250 net for two), making it tight without a second income or housing assistance. NH's tax structure stretches the take-home further than neighbouring Massachusetts or Maine. For the cost basis, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 3

Is it better to live in Massachusetts or New Hampshire?

Accepted Answer

The honest answer comes down to job market versus cost. Massachusetts wins on career options (Boston's tech, biotech, finance, and academic ecosystems are deep), public transit, and breadth of services. New Hampshire wins on cost ($3,125 a month vs Massachusetts $3,575), taxes (NH has no income or sales tax; Massachusetts charges 5 percent on income plus 6.25 percent sales), and a quieter lifestyle. The classic compromise is to live in southern NH (Salem, Nashua, Hudson) and work in Massachusetts, capturing most of the salary upside with NH's tax structure. Property taxes run higher in NH; Massachusetts' progressive income tax now adds a 4 percent surcharge above $1 million in earnings. For the NH cost picture, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 4

Is it cheaper to live in NH or mass?

Accepted Answer

New Hampshire is meaningfully cheaper than Massachusetts. NH sits at around $3,125 per person per month for a moderate lifestyle, Massachusetts at $3,575, a gap of about $450 a month, or roughly $5,400 a year per person. Housing is a smaller part of that gap than the headline totals suggest: NH moderate housing averages $1,453 against Massachusetts's $1,715. The wider difference shows up across the rest of the basket. Southern NH (Nashua, Manchester, the Salem area) inherits some of the Boston-metro pricing pressure, so the gap narrows there, but anywhere north or west of the Lakes Region runs materially cheaper. NH has no broad-based income tax or sales tax, which compounds the advantage for higher earners. Property taxes run higher in NH to compensate. For the full breakdown, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 5

What are the negatives of living in New Hampshire?

Accepted Answer

The honest trade-offs of living in New Hampshire are property taxes, winter, and limited urban scale. NH compensates for having no state income tax or sales tax with property taxes that often run 1.5 to 2.5 percent of assessed value, meaningful for homeowners and retirees on fixed budgets. Winters are long and cold (lows below 0°F not unusual in the north), and heating bills typically add $100 to $300 a month from November through March. Major job markets in tech, finance, and biotech concentrate around Boston, so career-driven residents often commute over the border or relocate eventually. NH's moderate benchmark of $3,125 per person per month sits below the US average ($3,275). For the full picture, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 6

What is a livable salary in NH?

Accepted Answer

A livable salary in New Hampshire covers around $3,125 per person per month, or roughly $37,500 a year before tax, based on CostLiving's moderate lifestyle benchmark. That funds rent, groceries, utilities, transport, and modest discretionary spending. Housing is the heavy line: a one-bedroom in Manchester or Nashua typically runs $1,500 to $2,000, while northern NH and the Connecticut River Valley drop to $1,000 to $1,400. NH sits modestly below the US average ($3,275) and is notably cheaper than Massachusetts ($3,575) and Rhode Island ($2,850). No state income tax helps higher earners; higher property taxes work in the opposite direction. For the full picture, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 7

Which state has the lowest cost of living?

Accepted Answer

The cheapest US states by CostLiving's moderate lifestyle benchmark sit in the South and lower Midwest: West Virginia ($2,150), Arkansas ($2,300), Mississippi ($2,325), Alabama ($2,400), and Tennessee ($2,750) lead the list. New Hampshire is not among them: its $3,125 per person per month moderate benchmark sits below the US average ($3,275), reflecting its proximity to Boston and tighter housing markets in the south of the state. NH offsets some of that with no income or sales tax, which favours higher earners. For someone optimising for the lowest absolute monthly cost, the cheapest options lean Deep South or Appalachian. For the full NH picture and how it compares, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.

Question 8

Why are people moving out of NH?

Accepted Answer

The main drivers of out-migration from New Hampshire are housing affordability, property taxes, and limited urban scale. NH's moderate cost of $3,125 per person per month sits below the US average ($3,275), and home prices in the southern half of the state have risen sharply over the past five years as Boston-area remote workers relocated north. Property tax rates run high (effective rates often 1.5 to 2.5 percent of assessed value) to make up for no income or sales tax, which hurts retirees and households on fixed budgets. Younger residents sometimes leave for larger metros with broader job markets in tech and finance. None of this overrides NH's quality-of-life draw: low crime, strong public schools, and ready access to mountains and ocean. For the full picture, see our New Hampshire cost of living page.
