Can you use the US dollar in the Cayman Islands?

Country Caribbean Updated June 2026

Yes. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere in the Cayman Islands: hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, taxis, and tourist-facing businesses all take USD as a matter of course. The local currency is the Cayman Islands dollar (KYD or CI$), pegged to USD at a fixed rate. Most card payments process in either KYD or USD, your choice; ATMs typically dispense both. The catch is the change. Pay in USD and you will often get change back in KYD at the official rate, which is fine but worth knowing if you plan to leave with no use for KYD afterwards. Smaller out-of-town shops and government offices may prefer KYD. For tourists and short-term visitors, carrying a US debit card and small USD bills works without friction.
