The Cayman Islands dollar (KYD or CI$) is stronger than the US dollar. The KYD has been pegged to USD at a fixed rate since 1974, set at US$1.20 per CI$1. So CI$1 = US$1.20, and US$1 = roughly CI$0.83. The peg is maintained by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and does not float against the market. Tourists often find this confusing because prices in stores may be listed in either currency, and a posted price can look low if you assume it is USD when it is actually KYD. Always check the currency on a price tag; the gap is 20 percent either way. For the cost of living picture, see our Cayman Islands cost of living page.
