Do US citizens need a visa for Brazil in 2026?

Country Latin America Updated June 2026

Yes. Brazil reinstated tourist visa requirements for US, Canadian, and Australian citizens effective 10 April 2025, ending the visa-free reciprocal arrangement that had run since 2019. US tourists now need a Brazil e-Visa, applied for online through the official VFS Global Brazil portal before travel. The e-Visa costs around $80, is valid for ten years from issue, and permits stays of up to 90 days per visit (extendable once for another 90 days, capped at 180 days in any 12-month period). Processing typically takes five business days but can run longer in peak season; apply at least three weeks before travel. The e-Visa is for tourism and short business trips only. Longer stays or work require a separate residency or work visa applied for through a Brazilian consulate. For the cost picture, see our Brazil cost of living page.
