Question 1

Can an American live in Aruba?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Americans can live in Aruba, but not as easily as a domestic US move. As a tourist, US citizens can stay up to 180 days a year without a visa. For long-term residence, you need a permit: most retirees apply through the Penshonado (retiree) programme, which requires proof of stable retirement income (typically $2,500 to $4,000 a month, depending on family size) and no work intent. Working in Aruba requires an employer-sponsored work permit, which is harder to secure and usually limited to specialised roles. Property ownership does not automatically grant residency. Aruba's moderate cost of living sits at $3,225 per person per month, slightly below the US average ($3,275), but higher than St. Thomas ($2,750) and somewhat lower than the Cayman Islands ($3,800). Question 2

Does US health insurance work in Aruba?

Accepted Answer

Most US health insurance plans do not cover routine care in Aruba. Medicare does not pay for services outside the US, with very limited exceptions for emergency care near the border. Standard employer-sponsored plans typically reimburse only emergency treatment abroad, and even then often at out-of-network rates with significant out-of-pocket cost. Long-term residents enrol in Aruba's national health insurance (AZV), which is mandatory once you hold a residency permit. International health insurance plans (Cigna Global, GeoBlue, IMG) cover non-residents and remote workers and run roughly $1,500 to $4,500 a year per adult depending on age and coverage. Travel insurance covers short stays only. For the full cost picture, see our Aruba cost of living page.

Question 3

How long can I stay in Aruba if I own property?

Accepted Answer

Owning property in Aruba does not automatically give you the right to stay long-term. As a US citizen, you can stay in Aruba as a tourist for up to 180 days in a 12-month period regardless of property ownership. Beyond that, you need a residency permit (the Penshonado programme for retirees, an employment-sponsored permit for workers, or a long-stay permit through investment in some cases). Buying a home, condo, or land is simple for foreigners and standard transaction fees apply (roughly 6 to 8 percent in stamp duties and notary fees), but the property itself does not extend your immigration status. Many US owners use their Aruban property as a long-stay second home within the 180-day window. For the full cost picture, see our Aruba cost of living page.

Question 4

How much money do I need to move to Aruba?

Accepted Answer

Moving to Aruba comfortably means budgeting for $5,000 per person per month after the move, plus several thousand in upfront costs. CostLiving's moderate lifestyle benchmark covers rent, groceries, utilities, transport, and modest discretionary spending. Housing dominates: a one-bedroom in central Oranjestad runs $900 to $1,400, with beach-adjacent or newer developments at $1,600 to $2,200. Upfront costs typically include first month plus deposit ($2,000 to $4,500), residency permit fees if applying ($500 to $1,500), and shipping household goods from the US (a 20-foot container runs roughly $4,000 to $7,000). Aruba sits just below the US national average ($3,275) on monthly costs and sits well above St Thomas ($2,750). For the full breakdown, see our Aruba cost of living page.

Question 5

How much money do you need to retire in Aruba?

Accepted Answer

A comfortable retirement in Aruba runs roughly $5,000 per person per month for one or $7,500 to $8,500 for a couple, based on CostLiving's comfortable lifestyle benchmark and the typical two-person scaling. Aruba's Penshonado programme requires monthly retirement income proof, typically $2,500 to $4,000 a month depending on family size and the housing setup, plus a health insurance plan that covers care on the island. US Social Security and most pensions remain payable to recipients in Aruba. Healthcare carries a premium for non-residents until enrolled in local coverage. Aruba is more expensive than St Thomas ($4,265), comparable to Curaçao ($5,310), and cheaper than Cayman ($5,890). For the full cost picture, see our Aruba cost of living page.

Question 6

How much does the average person make in Aruba?

Accepted Answer

The average wage in Aruba runs roughly $25,000 to $35,000 USD a year, with median household income around $35,000 to $45,000 depending on source and methodology. The tourism and hospitality sectors that dominate the local economy pay below the offshore-services and financial-services jobs that pay best. CostLiving's moderate lifestyle benchmark for Aruba is $3,225 per person per month, or about $38,700 a year, so the typical Aruban wage sits slightly below the moderate threshold. The mismatch between local wages and import-driven prices is the main household-budget pressure on the island. For the full cost picture, see our Aruba cost of living page.

Question 7

Is Aruba cheaper than the USA?

Accepted Answer

Aruba is cheaper than the USA on totals: Aruba sits at $3,225 per person per month for a moderate lifestyle versus the US national average of $3,275, a gap of about $50 a month or 1.5 percent. The composition of that spend matters more than the headline. Housing in Aruba is cheaper than US metros at the same total cost ($900 to $1,400 for a one-bedroom in central Oranjestad), but groceries and household goods run 30 to 50 percent above mainland US averages because nearly everything is imported. Healthcare, utilities, and transport all carry an island-economy premium. For someone moving from a high-cost US metro like New York ($5,775) or Los Angeles ($4,350), Aruba is dramatically cheaper. Even relative to the cheapest US states like Mississippi ($2,325) or Alabama ($2,400), Aruba comes out modestly more expensive on totals, though the difference narrows when housing costs are factored in relative to imported-goods markups can erode any gap depending on lifestyle. For the full breakdown, see our Aruba cost of living page.

Question 8

What is a good salary in Aruba?

Accepted Answer

A good single-person salary in Aruba runs roughly $40,000 to $60,000 USD a year, with $45,000 covering CostLiving's moderate lifestyle benchmark ($3,225 per person per month) plus reasonable savings. Senior professional roles in finance, hospitality management, and offshore services can reach $80,000 to $150,000. Aruba's income tax is progressive and runs higher than most US states (top rate around 52 percent on the highest bracket), so headline salaries do not translate one-for-one to take-home compared to the mainland US. For a household of two, a combined $80,000 to $110,000 typically covers comfortable living. Aruba's moderate cost of $3,225 sits just below the US average ($3,275) and well below Cayman ($3,800).
