Can I still collect Social Security if I move to Costa Rica?

Country Latin America Updated June 2026

Yes. US Social Security retirement, disability, and survivors benefits are fully payable to recipients living in Costa Rica with no reduction. Payment options include direct deposit into a US bank account (and ATM withdrawal in Costa Rica, typically at 0 to 3 percent foreign-transaction cost depending on the issuing bank), direct deposit into a Costa Rican bank in colones (slower setup, requires SSN-on-file with Banco de Costa Rica or a major commercial bank), or paper check (slow, generally not recommended). Annual benefit verification (Form SSA-7162) must be returned to maintain payment, sent by SSA to overseas recipients. Costa Rica does not tax US Social Security (foreign-sourced income is not taxed for residents); US federal tax may still apply depending on overall income. The Pensionado residency visa specifically accepts Social Security as qualifying pension income at $1,000+ per month, making it the most common visa pathway for US retirees.
