Is Chile expensive for Americans?

Country Latin America Updated June 2026

Not by US standards. Chileโ€™s moderate cost of living of $1,825 per person per month is roughly half the US average ($3,525), so most US visitors and movers find Chile materially cheaper across food, transport, housing, and services. Santiago is the most expensive part of the country but still cheaper than most major US metros. Where Americans get caught out: imported branded goods (clothing, electronics, cars) carry import duties and run close to US prices or higher; eating at top-end restaurants in Vitacura or Las Condes can hit US prices for the same experience; and short-stay tourist pricing in San Pedro de Atacama, Patagonia, and Easter Island runs much higher than mainland Chile. For longer stays in regular neighbourhoods, Chile is consistently cheaper than the US. For the full breakdown, see our Chile cost of living page.
