Is $1000 dollars a lot in Colombia?

Country Latin America Updated June 2026

In monthly-income terms, broadly yes. $1,000 USD a month sits well above Colombiaโ€™s national budget benchmark of $705 but just below the countryโ€™s moderate single-person threshold of $1,175. It is roughly two and a half times the Colombian minimum wage (around $400 a month including the mandatory transport subsidy in 2026), and exceeds the median Colombian household income. For a single adult in Medellin, Pereira, or Bucaramanga, $1,000 supports a livable-but-careful lifestyle outside El Poblado-tier neighbourhoods. As a one-off amount (cash in hand), $1,000 equals roughly COP 4 million, which buys a high-end smartphone, a few months of mid-tier rent in Pereira or Bucaramanga, or a fortnight of decent restaurant meals plus tourism. For US standards $1,000 reads small; for Colombian standards it is comfortable. For the full breakdown, see our Colombia cost of living page.
